Despite the tough match, St. Pauli's playing pleasure and desire to combine were evident, with Matthias Pereira Lage coming close to scoring in the 82nd minute, hitting the underside of the bar.

The move to play at Millerntor-Stadion allowed Norderstedt to hope for more ticket revenue, as the stadium was almost sold out. In extra time, Norderstedt became increasingly dangerous, with Vasilj saving his team from embarrassment. Vasilj's heroics in the shootout cemented his status as the match's standout performer, as FC St. Pauli completed their first mandatory task in the new football season, advancing to the second round of the DFB-Pokal.
