Victorian Christmas brought thousands amidst rain, power outage in Nevada City

Nevada City’s annual Victorian Christmas event went ahead as planned, despite heavy rain and a three-hour power outage. Organised by the Nevada City Chamber of Commerce, the celebration has drawn visitors since 1978. This year, families like the Stevens from Folsom joined for the first time to experience the festive atmosphere in the historic Gold Rush town.

The event showcased Nevada City’s well-preserved Victorian architecture, with gas-lit lamp posts and a locally grown Christmas tree adding to the charm. Visitors enjoyed period activities like roasting chestnuts and live music from a string quartet dressed in 19th-century clothing.

More than 50 vendors and 100 small businesses and restaurants stayed open throughout the day. The event serves as a key economic boost for the community, bringing in shoppers and tourists during the holiday season. Around mid-afternoon, a power cut plunged downtown into darkness for nearly three hours. Crowds remained patient, and when electricity was restored just before 5 p.m., a cheer erupted from the gathered visitors. Among them were Connie Stevens and her family, who travelled from Folsom to take part. Her son Noah and his girlfriend particularly enjoyed the small-town Christmas atmosphere, undeterred by the weather or the blackout.

The Victorian Christmas event carried on without major disruptions, offering a mix of tradition and local commerce. The power outage and rain did not stop attendees from celebrating in Nevada City’s historic streets. For many, like the Stevens family, the event provided a memorable first-time experience of the town’s festive spirit.
