Victoria Azarenka, a twice-champion at the Grand Slams and a two-time finalist at Flushing Meadows, won't be gracing the U.S. Open this year due to family matters. She shared her situation on Thursday, stating that California laws wouldn't allow her to leave the state with her son, Leo, as she and his father attempted to do so. The 28-year-old Belarusian confirmed on Monday that she would not participate in the final major tournament of the year.

Lamenting her inability to attend, she said, "Unfortunately, due to family issues I'm trying to resolve, I won't be able to participate in this year's U.S. Open. Despite missing this New York favorite, I'm excited to return next year." Azarenka gave birth in December and made her comeback to tennis in June, but shortly after Wimbledon, she and Leo's father parted ways.

Azarenka recently stated that no one should have to choose between their children and their careers, showing her commitment to being a devoted mother and a successful tennis player.[1]

Reports from various reputable sources suggest that these family matters may involve a custody dispute, but specific details remain scarce.

Misa Eguchi, a Japanese player, will replace Azarenka in the tournament starting on the 28th of August.

Enrichment Data: Victoria Azarenka's absence from the U.S. Open this year seems to be linked to her ongoing custody battle with Leo's father. This conflict has affected her personal and professional life, leading to various absences from tournaments. However, the specifics of the situation, especially regarding the 2021 U.S. Open, are not publicly known.
