Victor Eklund signs with Islanders after breakout Swedish season
Victor Eklund has signed with the New York Islanders after a strong season in Sweden's top hockey league. The 20-year-old forward put up 24 points in 43 games before making the move to North America. His new deal marks the next step in a career that has already included international success. Eklund began his professional journey in Djurgardens' system back in 2020. He spent years developing in Allsvenskan, Sweden's second division, before breaking into the Swedish Hockey League. Last season, he tallied six goals and 18 assists, proving himself at the senior level.
His performance caught the attention of NHL scouts, leading to a three-year, entry-level contract signed on 14 July 2025. The deal came after he helped Sweden win gold at the 2026 World Junior Championship, where he recorded eight points in seven games. Standing at 5'11" and weighing 161 lbs, Eklund brings speed and playmaking to the Islanders' organisation. The team has assigned him to their AHL affiliate, the Bridgeport Islanders, for the remainder of the season. There, he will continue adapting to the North American game.
Eklund's transition to professional hockey in the US begins with Bridgeport. His contract runs for three years, giving the Islanders time to develop his skills further. The move follows a season of steady progress in Sweden and a gold medal on the world stage.
