Victim's Daughter of Late Daniel Serafini, Ex-MLB Pitcher, Shares Remarks Following His Killing of In-Laws

In a shocking turn of events, former Major League Baseball (MLB) player Daniel Serafini has been convicted of first-degree murder, attempted murder, and burglary in connection to the 2021 shooting of his in-laws, Robert Spohr and Wendy Wood, at their luxury home in Lake Tahoe.

The murder occurred on June 5, 2021, when Serafini, armed with a .22-caliber gun, sneaked into the Spohr-Wood residence while the couple was watching television. Gary Spohr, 70, was shot dead at close range, while Wendy Wood, 69, miraculously survived but suffered brain damage and ultimately took her own life in 2023.

Three months prior to the murder, Serafini was overheard by a mine foreman in a furious phone call, expressing his desire to kill his in-laws.

Surveillance footage obtained from the crime scene showed Serafini entering the Spohr-Wood residence on the night of June 5, 2021, wearing a backpack and a black hoodie. The murder and attempted murder took place at the same location.

The prosecution described the killing as an execution-style murder, with Spohr being 'executed' with a bullet to the back of his head, while Wood was struck by gunfire and managed to call 911 before succumbing to her injuries.

During the trial, testimonies were given by Serafini's wife, Erin Spohr, who revealed an open marriage but said she still trusted him. Samantha Scott, Serafini's nanny turned lover, also admitted to driving Serafini to the crime scene.

Adrienne Spohr, another daughter of the victims, has been advocating for justice for her parents throughout the trial. She paid an emotional tribute to her parents, describing them as strong, adventurous, generous, and loving individuals.

The jury found Serafini guilty of all charges, including first-degree murder for the death of Gary Spohr, attempted murder for the shooting of Wendy Wood, and burglary. However, they found him not guilty of child endangerment as his children were not present at the time of the shooting.

Prosecutors claimed that Serafini was in desperate need of cash following an acrimonious divorce and a failed bar venture, and that he had been having an affair with his children's nanny, Samantha Scott. Transcripts of angry emails and text messages between Serafini and his wife's parents further showed a heated, ongoing dispute over a $1.3 million loan from his in-laws to help fund his wife's horse ranch business.

The trial lasted for several months, and Adrienne Spohr stated that her mother re-learned how to walk and write after the shooting and even went hiking, but struggled with depression and anxiety, leading to her suicide in 2023.

The jury also found that Serafini was guilty of charge enhancements, including discharging a firearm to cause great bodily injury, lying in wait, and that the attack was woeful, willful, and premeditated.

Daniel Serafini, a former MLB player for the Minnesota Twins and Chicago Cubs, had a successful career in baseball, also playing for the Cincinnati Reds and Colorado Rockies, and representing Italy in the 2013 World Baseball Classic.

The verdict brings a sense of justice to the family of the victims, who have been seeking it for four years. The sentencing hearing for Serafini is scheduled for a later date.
