Rewritten Article:
A tragic incident occurred on Rama II Road in Samut Sakhon province, claiming the life of a 46-year-old man named Amnat Thongkham. The unfortunate event took place when his pickup truck was hit by chunks of concrete from an old flyover on Tuesday morning.
In a Facebook post late Tuesday night, People's Party MP for Samut Sakhon, Nattapong Sumanotham, shared the heartbreaking news of Amnat's demise. The victim's family took his body home for funeral rites in Nakhon Sawan on Wednesday.
Caused by a ruptured liver and extensive bleeding, Amnat passed away at Samut Sakhon Hospital around 9pm on Tuesday. Medical professionals attempted to save his internal organs, which were damaged by the impact of the falling concrete.
The accident happened on the outbound side of Rama II Road in Muang district. The concrete chunks, measuring approximately 30cm wide and 50cm long, are believed to have fallen from the Mahachai-Krathumbaen flyover, which is around 30 years old.
Chanraem Thongkham, Amnat's wife, is still in shock from her husband's sudden death. She expressed her desire for all responsible agencies to conduct thorough checks on similar infrastructure to prevent such tragedies from happening again in the future.
Harboring concerns about the flyover's condition, the Department of Highways in Samut Sakhon plans to thoroughly repair the Mahachai flyover and install metal netting to prevent any potential falling debris. Following the incident, Transport Minister Suriya Jungrungreangkit ordered a comprehensive inspection of all 17,500 flyovers and bridges above highways nationwide, including the 209 flyovers on Rama II Road.
As the incident underscores the pressing need for infrastructure maintenance and updates, public and official pressure is mounting to address the issue swiftly. Although specific measures to ensure the safety of similar structures are not fully detailed at present, the urgency for action is evident.
