Victim of Concrete Fall on Rama II Road Dies
In the heart-wrenching event on Rama II Road, Samut Sakhon, a pickup truck driver named Amnat Thongkham was hit by chunks of concrete from an old flyover, leading to his tragic demise on Tuesday evening.
MP Nattapong Sumanotham, representative of Samut Sakhon for the People's Party, shared the heartbreaking news on Facebook late Tuesday night, as reported by his younger brother.
According to various media reports, Amnat, aged 46, succumbed to his internal injuries at Samut Sakhon Hospital around 9pm after sustaining a ruptured liver and heavy abdominal bleeding. Medical professionals did their best to save his damaged organs, but it was in vain.
Amnat was on the receiving end of two concrete chunks measuring approximately 30cm wide and 50cm long on the outbound side of Rama II Road in Muang district on Tuesday morning.
Transport officials suspected that the concrete blocks originated from the Mahachai-Krathumbaen flyover, which is a 30-year-old structure.
Amnat, a native of Nakhon Sawan province, lived in tambon Phan Thai Norasing in Muang district, Samut Sakhon. His heartbroken wife, Chanraem Thongkham, took his body home in Nakhon Sawan for funeral rites after the tragic incident.
Chanraem expressed her desire for all relevant agencies to conduct thorough investigations, ensuring no other family endures such a devastating loss.
The Mahachai flyover will be repaired meticulously with the installation of metal netting to prevent such incidents in the future. Transport Minister Suriya Jungrungreangkit has ordered the Highways Department to inspect the condition of all 17,500 flyovers and bridges across Thailand, including the 209 flyovers on Rama II Road.
Tragically, this event underscores the challenges in Thailand’s infrastructure management, where age-related structural degradation often arises due to systemic problems like inadequate maintenance schedules and delayed accountability measures. As the population grapples with the consequences of these issues, calls for nationwide inspections of aging infrastructure, changes in resource allocation, and enhanced bureaucratic accountability have become increasingly prominent.
