New President for the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution Announced

The Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution (BfV) is set to welcome a new president, as Sinan Selen has been chosen for the role. The appointment is expected to be confirmed at the next cabinet meeting, following a vacancy in the position since the fall of last year.

Sinan Selen, who has served as the vice president of the BfV since the beginning of 2019, will officially take over the presidency from Thomas Haldenwang. Born in Turkey and raised in Cologne, Selen brings a unique perspective to the role, making history as the first person with a migration background to head the BfV.

Thomas Haldenwang, who announced his candidacy for the CDU in the federal election in November 2024, had been the president of the BfV since 2018. His plans to retire had been known for some time, but his decision to run as a direct candidate for the CDU in Wuppertal came as a surprise to many. Unfortunately, Haldenwang's candidacy was not successful.

Sinan Selen's extensive experience in the field of security makes him well-suited for the position. Prior to his role at the BfV, he had a career in various security agencies and the Federal Ministry of the Interior. He also spent three years working in the private sector at the TUI Group, focusing on security issues.

Alexander Dobrindt, the Interior Minister, praised Selen's expertise in combating crime, terrorism, espionage, and cyber threats. His main areas of focus at the BfV are cybersecurity and Islamic terrorism. Konstantin von Notz, deputy chairman of the Green parliamentary group, also praised Selen's appointment, stating he brings a lot of experience and expertise.

SPD MP Hakan Demir, who knows Sinan Selen from the interior committee, praised him as a competent and highly respected top official. Several media outlets had previously reported on the personnel decision regarding Sinan Selen.

Sinan Selen's appointment as the president of the BfV comes at a critical time, as the agency faces challenges in maintaining national security in an increasingly digital world. His leadership is expected to be instrumental in addressing these challenges and ensuring the safety of German citizens.
