Vice President Sara endorses Vice Ganda's persona non grata status: "Decision lies with the City Council"
Davao City Council Does Not Declare Vice Ganda Persona Non Grata
Controversy erupted over comedian Vice Ganda's joke during the "Superdivas" concert, which referenced former President Rodrigo Duterte, the West Philippine Sea, and the International Criminal Court (ICC). The joke went viral, sparking mixed reactions from netizens.
The joke centred around Vice Ganda's satirical take on Duterte's campaign promise to jet ski to the West Philippine Sea to protest China's incursions. In the joke, he offered a "jet ski holiday" to the West Philippine Sea, complete with unlimited water bombing from Chinese vessels and a free trip to The Hague by the ICC.
The Davao City Council, which represents the city's three districts, considered the joke disrespectful, as it was perceived to insult Duterte personally and offend Davaoeños who hold him in high esteem. However, contrary to reports, the council has not declared Vice Ganda persona non grata.
Instead, the council passed a resolution condemning Vice Ganda’s remarks, expressing offense on behalf of the people of Davao City. Acting Vice Mayor Rodrigo "Rigo" Duterte urged Vice Ganda to show the same hard work, discipline, and respect that Davao's leaders and citizens demonstrate.
Vice President Sara Duterte also weighed in, stating that the decision to declare or not declare Vice Ganda persona non grata rests solely with the Davao City Council. She clarified that the council should make this decision through a majority decision.
Despite calls by some supporters of Duterte for a persona non grata declaration, city officials dismissed circulating documents claiming otherwise as satirical or fake. The people of Davao have expressed indignation, but there has been no official call for a boycott of Vice Ganda's endorsements.
In conclusion, while the joke made by Vice Ganda during the concert has caused controversy, the Davao City Council has not declared him persona non grata. The council has, however, expressed its disapproval of the joke through a resolution. The decision on whether to declare Vice Ganda persona non grata remains with the Davao City Council.
