Tamil Nadu's Chandrapuram Ponnusamy Radhakrishnan Nominated as NDA's Vice-Presidential Candidate

In a significant political development, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has chosen Chandrapuram Ponnusamy Radhakrishnan, a seasoned politician from Tamil Nadu, as the Vice-Presidential candidate of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) for the upcoming election on September 9, 2025.

Born in Tiruppur, Tamil Nadu, in 1957, Radhakrishnan joined the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) as a youth and became a foundational member of the BJP when it was established in 1980. His political career in Tamil Nadu spans over four decades, marked by key roles such as being the BJP state president from 2004 to 2007 and being elected as an MP from Coimbatore in 1998 and again in 1999.

Radhakrishnan's political campaigns in Tamil Nadu have been extensive, including a major 93-day, 19,000-km Rath Yatra focused on issues like river linking, counter-terrorism, social reform, and anti-drug efforts. Despite electoral defeats in 2004, 2014, and 2019 in Coimbatore, he remained a prominent BJP figure and a key organizer in Tamil Nadu politics.

Beyond Tamil Nadu, Radhakrishnan has held significant constitutional appointments, serving as the Governor of Jharkhand from February 2023 to July 2024 and currently holding the position of Governor of Maharashtra since July 2024, also holding additional charges such as Governor of Telangana and Lieutenant Governor of Puducherry.

The DMK, the ruling party in Tamil Nadu, has welcomed the nomination of Radhakrishnan but expressed their expectation that a Tamil politician will be chosen to oppose him. The BJP, however, hopes to enhance its support in Tamil Nadu, despite the ruling dispensation's efforts to send a message that the state is not being singled out for step motherly treatment.

Radhakrishnan's nomination comes following the resignation of Jagdeep Dhankhar as the Chairman of the Rajya Sabha, necessitating a mid-term election of a Vice-President. With the NDA commanding around 423 votes in an electoral college of 782 MPs, Radhakrishnan's election seems likely, unless the Opposition fields a strong candidate to test the political temperature.

In summary, Chandrapuram Ponnusamy Radhakrishnan is a veteran BJP leader from Tamil Nadu with a rich political career as a former Lok Sabha MP, party state president, and constitutional officeholder, now reaching national prominence as the NDA's vice-presidential candidate in 2025. The election promises to be a significant political event, with the Opposition compelled to field a candidate to test the political temperature and challenge Radhakrishnan's ideological stance.
