holiday season caution for dog owners
As the festive season approaches in Hesse, Germany, veterinarians often notice an increase in cases of pet poisoning, particularly in dogs. Dr. Melina Gantzer, a vet in Weilburg, emphasizes the potential dangers of common festive treats like chocolate and raisins.
Both chocolate and raisins can be harmful to dogs due to their toxic effects. Symptoms might include vomiting, diarrhea, heart problems, breathing difficulties, and muscle cramps. The danger level varies depending on the dog's size and sensitivity.
Chocolate's toxicity is due to theobromine, a component highest in cocoa powder and dark chocolate. Varying doses and body masses can significantly influence the potential harm. For instance, a smaller breed like a Chihuahua may tolerate more than a larger breed like a Great Dane.
Raisins pose another threat, with just three grams per kilogram of body weight being enough to cause poisoning. Besides chocolate and raisins, there are other potentially harmful substances to be aware of, such as xylitol, macadamia nuts, and even bones from the Christmas goose.
Xylitol, often found in sugar-free products, can lead to rapid heart rate, visual disturbances, and severe symptoms in dogs. Macadamia nuts may cause stiff joints, fever, and severe pain when consumed. Bones from the Christmas goose may splinter easily, leading to damaged stomach and intestines when bitten into.

Besides the aforementioned hazards, other potentially toxic food items for dogs include onions, garlic, grapes, and raw potatoes. Raw meat, eggs, fish, and spicy food can also pose risks due to contamination or adverse reactions. Salt, alcohol, and yeast dough should also be avoided, as they can lead to various health problems. Tobacco and nicotine products are highly toxic to dogs and should be kept out of reach.
This festive season, be mindful of these potential hazards and ensure your beloved pets remain safe and healthy. Seek veterinary attention immediately if you suspect your pet has ingested something harmful.
