On June 15, 2025, Germany took a significant step forward in acknowledging the contributions of its military veterans by observing its inaugural National Veteran's Day. In the heart of Berlin, President of the Bundestag, Julia Kloeckner (CDU), proclaimed it a "task" for society to express gratitude towards soldiers who have served in the Bundeswehr.

Kloeckner stressed the importance of continued recognition beyond this day, emphasizing that the Bundeswehr plays a crucial role in society. Indeed, the commanding heights of German society, led by Federal Chancellor Friedrich Merz (CDU), regard the men and women who serve or have served in the Bundeswehr as being deserving of thanks, recognition, and respect.

The origins of Veteran's Day stem from a growing appreciation for the Bundeswehr, driven by changes in public opinion following Russia's 2022 invasion of Ukraine. This shift led Germany to increase defense spending and military aid, and to reconsider its stance on honoring its armed forces. Despite a historical avoidance of military commemorations due to lingering World War II-era sentiments and deep-rooted pacifism, Germany is now ready to embrace its veterans.

The creation of Veteran’s Day is a bold step in recognizing and appreciating the service of all Bundeswehr soldiers since the post-war era. Defence Minister Boris Pistorius Labeled the event as "a strong, important and long-overdue signal of recognition and appreciation." This groundbreaking tradition is a manifestation of a broader societal movement to acknowledge the sacrifices and contributions of current and former service members.

The day's celebrations included ceremonies and festivities across the country, with a "veterans’ village" set up outside Berlin’s Reichstag building. In keeping with Germany's sensitivity towards militaristic displays, there were no parades of fighter jets or tanks. Instead, the focus was on individual service members, fostering dialogue between the military, politics, and the broader society.

Veterans' associations, such as those representing active military and reserves, have called for increased visibility and respect for veterans, with hopes for a central contact point within the Bundeswehr to address veterans' concerns. The establishment of Veteran’s Day represents the beginning of a process aimed at better integrating veterans into society and advancing discussions about the military's role in modern Germany.

In this new chapter, Germany is readying itself to embrace its veterans and the sacrifices made by them. With increased support and recognition, we can look forward to a more cohesive society that honors the men and women who have served and continue to serve, ultimately fostering a deeper understanding of the role of the Bundeswehr in contemporary Germany.
