Veteran Smuggler Re-emerges in Cornwall Region
Step back a century to celebrate an iconic 'MG' – 'Old Number One' or 'Kimber's Special' – as it roars back onto the Land's End Trial scene! This legendary ride, once piloted by the founder himself, Cecil Kimber, bagged a gold medal way back in '25, marking a pivotal moment in MG's journey.
Thanks to the collaborative spirit of the MG Car Club's Devon & Cornwall Centre, Vintage Register, British Motor Museum, and the Motor Cycling Club Group, this vintage gem headed down to Cornwall over the Easter weekend. The occasion? Hail the centennial of an influential milestone in MG's creation.
'Old Number One' – the first MG ever built for motorsport – aimed to ride the wave of popularity from 20's trials and establish the sporty reputation of the burgeoning MG marque. Typically housed at the British Motor Museum in Gaydon, this classic beauty embarked on a journey to Land's End on Good Friday, making a striking sight amidst the cloudy Cornish landscape.
As Saturday rolled around, the car re-enacted climbing 'Old Bluehills,' the harsh terrain over which Kimber triumphed a hundred years prior. Resident driver Stephen Laing of the British Motor Museum steered the wheels, while Curator Cat Boxall took the passenger seat. The weekend also witnessed the vintage vehicle displayed in the showroom of local MG dealer, Hawkins, in Hayle.
Rain, floods, and all – there was no stopping 'Old Number One' from making a symbolical visit to the Land's End signpost. Despite the inclement weather, the sun broke through just in time for commemorative clicks. Plus, a scenic drive with fellow MG enthusiasts culminated at Hawkins MG in Hayle, bridging the gap between MG's history and present-day thrill.
In essence, 'Kimber's Special' revisited the Land's End Trial to honor its '25 win, complete with reenactments and a heartwarming gathering of car enthusiasts. Pack your goggles and take a detour down motoring memory lane – MG's legacy continues to race on!
