U.S. Marine Corps Veteran Lance Cpl. Terry Christensen Inducted into the "Hall of Heroes"
Lance Corporal Terry Christensen, a U.S. Marine Corps veteran who served during the Vietnam War, was honoured posthumously on August 8th, 2025, at the William S. Middleton Memorial Veterans Hospital in Madison. The ceremony recognised Christensen's bravery and service, which earned him the Bronze Star with a device for Heroism and a Purple Heart with a Gold Star device.
Christensen, who was drafted at 19, served for one year, five months, and six days. His induction into the "Hall of Heroes" was a poignant moment, as he passed away nine hours after his induction ceremony in the hospital's ICU.
During the ceremony, Christensen expressed his feelings, stating, "I really felt like I was doing my job, not a hero, but I am glad you do recognize Marines for what they do." His wife, Catherine, was present and said, "It's such an honor. It's such an honor."
Catherine shared that the camaraderie and brotherhood during Christensen's service in Vietnam were crucial for his survival. She also revealed a unique connection between the couple, as both were shot during their service in Vietnam.
The "Hall of Heroes" at the William S. Middleton Memorial Veterans Hospital honours valorous Veterans who have served in conflicts or wartime and have received military awards for valor or specific combat actions. Inductees must be or would have been eligible for care at this VA hospital and have a connection to the local VA and community.
Previously, Sergeant Thomas Feeney, born in Ireland, was inducted into the "Hall of Heroes" on November 10, 2021. Feeney's story highlights his enduring courage and character, including his battle with cancer at the Madison VA Hospital. He was a respected member of several veterans’ organizations and passed away on March 14, 1980.
The "Hall of Heroes" serves to honour Veterans' valor and their connection to the local VA community and is located on the first floor of the Madison VA hospital in room A1005. The hospital has inducted more than 20 veterans into the "Hall of Heroes," with Christensen being the latest addition.
The ceremony for Christensen was particularly special as it was held on a day when he met with his friends every year. The auditorium filled with tears as they honoured Christensen for one last time. Loved ones will miss Christensen's stories, joy, and selflessness.
