Veteran footballer Jérôme Boateng bids adieu to the sport following his participation in the World Cup and two league titles
Jérôme Boateng Announces Retirement from Football at 37
Jérôme Boateng, a World Cup champion with Germany and twice winner of the Champions League with Bayern Munich, has announced his retirement from football at the age of 37. The defender, born in Berlin of Ghanaian descent, made the announcement in a video posted on his official Instagram page.
Boateng's career spanned over two decades, during which he played for several top clubs. Besides Bayern Munich, he represented Hamburger SV, Manchester City, and LASK Linz in Austria. Boateng spent a decade at Bayern Munich and won an impressive list of titles with the club, including two Champions League titles (2012/13 and 2019/20), nine Bundesliga titles, and five German Cups.
During his time at Manchester City in the 2010/11 season, Boateng won the English Cup. His brief stint at the club was fruitful, as he also added a domestic cup victory to his trophy cabinet.
Boateng's career was not without controversy. He was involved in several domestic violence incidents during the later stages of his career, for which he was convicted in court. These incidents cast a shadow over his illustrious career, which saw him play a total of 76 games for the German national team and score one goal.
Interestingly, Boateng's older brother, Prince Boateng, represented an African nation in international football, while Jérôme chose to represent Germany. Boateng defended the colors of LASK Linz in Austria in the 2024/25 season, participating in 14 matches.
As Boateng hangs up his boots, the football world bids farewell to a player who made a significant impact on the game. His retirement comes at a time when college football ties with PSG at the top, with Paulo Fonseca on 'probation'. The future of football games today is uncertain, but one thing is for sure - Boateng will be remembered as one of the greats.
