Jim Fahnhorst, Three-Time Super Bowl Champion, Passes Away

Jim Fahnhorst, a three-time Super Bowl champion and a key member of the San Francisco 49ers' offensive line in the 1980s, passed away on Wednesday.

Fahnhorst embarked on a coaching career at the end of his playing days, but his NFL journey began much earlier. After spending two years in the United States Football League (USFL), he signed with the 49ers as a free agent in 1984. This marked the start of his seven-season stint with the team, during which he made 82 appearances and started 38 games.

Before joining the 49ers, Fahnhorst was a first-team All-Big Ten standout at the University of Minnesota in 1981. His impressive college career earned him a fourth-round pick and the No. 92 overall selection by the Minnesota Vikings, his home-state team. However, he did not play for the Vikings and instead joined the 49ers.

Fahnhorst was a contributing member of the 49ers teams that won Super Bowls XIX, XVIII, and XXIV. Notably, he played in six postseason games and made an additional five starts. His tenure with the 49ers also saw him log 232 career tackles, seven interceptions, and a sack.

Interestingly, Fahnhorst's brother, Keith Fahnhorst, also had a long-standing career with the 49ers. Keith played four seasons together with Jim on the San Francisco team, but his stint with the team spanned from 1974 to 1987, a decade before Jim joined.

After retiring from football, Jim Fahnhorst pursued a psychology degree at the University of San Francisco and later coached at high schools in the Minneapolis, Minn. area. He also spent time on staff at Division III Macalester College.

This information is not related to an NFL Week 3 injury report. The source of this information is an article by Garrett Podell.

Our thoughts are with Jim Fahnhorst's family and friends during this difficult time. His contributions to the sport of football and his impact on the San Francisco 49ers will not be forgotten.
