Vessel collides with a rocky outcrop
In the heart of Dagestan, tragedy struck twice when two boat accidents occurred near a hydroelectric power station in the Sulak Canyon. In the most recent incident on May 2, a boat capsized after hitting a rock, leading to a heart-wrenching loss of life—a 32-year-old woman from the Yaroslavl region.
Six other individuals were injured in the incident. These victims include men from Rяzan and Kaluga, and women from Ozerск, Kaluga, Novosibirsk, and Primorsky Krai. They've since been transferred to a central city hospital in Kizlyar. The medical team has assessed that the lives of the injured are not in danger, and they're determining the best course of treatment.
A preliminary investigation has been initiated to delve into the cause of the accident. Though specific procedural updates, such as charged filed or additional casualties, have yet to be disclosed.
Interestingly, this isn't the first incident in Dagestan involving a boat crashing into rocks. Just days prior, another boat tragically capsized in the Sulak Canyon, leading to a woman's death. The boat driver was detained post-accident.
Despite the available information, details about the identities of the deceased woman, as well as other passengers involved in both incidents, have not been publicly disclosed in the available reports. Both cases seem to be under ongoing investigation.
Stay tuned for more updates as this developing story unfolds.
