Verdict in Masra trial diminishes prospects for democracy, asserts Chad

In a controversial turn of events, Chad's former Prime Minister and main opposition leader, Success Masra, has been sentenced to 20 years in prison. The verdict, handed down on charges including hate speech, xenophobia, incitement to hatred and revolt, complicity to murder, and inciting inter-communal violence that resulted in 42 deaths in May 2025, has sparked a wave of debate and concern both domestically and internationally.

The unrest, a deadly clash between herders and farmers, particularly in Mandakao, southwestern Chad, has been a contentious issue. Masra's trial, some argue, is more about silencing a political rival than the charges. Nixon Katembo, a political analyst, echoes similar sentiments, stating that the trial was politically motivated.

Masra's defense lawyer condemned the trial as based on an "empty dossier," lacking evidence and constituting judicial weaponization against an opposition figure. Activists from Masra's party, Les Transformateurs, protested the verdict, denouncing the government of President Mahamat Idriss Deby Itno. Masra was arrested just two days after the May 14 violence, and his sentencing is seen as part of broader repression against dissent in Chad.

For Masra's supporters, the verdict confirms fears that the transition in Chad is shifting from a carefully stage-managed facade of democracy to a dynastically entrenched reality of one-man rule. Claudia Hoinathy, vice president in charge of leadership and women's engagement within Masra's Les Transformateurs party, believes the conviction is an attempt for Deby to tighten his grip on power.

The sentencing is widely seen as a move by President Deby to quiet opposition voices. Lewis Mudge, Central Africa director at Human Rights Watch, stated that the sentence given to Succes Masra sends a chilling message to critics and demonstrates the Chadian government's intolerance of criticism and political opposition parties. Various human rights groups have warned that the ruling could reignite pockets of unrest similar to the October 2022 protests.

However, there are signs of hope. Les Transformateurs are considering giving Masra amnesty, while lawyers continue to appeal the decision. If they eventually succeed with their appeal, the previous conviction could be expunged.

The African Union, being a major regional player, is unlikely to publicly comment on the goings-on in Chad. Yet, regional and international supporters should denounce this politically motivated judgment and urge the country's leaders to make good on promises for democratic reform. The conviction of Masra has upended hopes for a meaningful political opposition and an independent judiciary in Chad.

Masra spent years in exile in the Central African Republic before being invited back to Chad to help form a transitional government. However, he broke ranks, contested the presidency, and ultimately lost. Despite his loss, his influence and the controversy surrounding his sentencing continue to shape Chad's political landscape. Masra has denied the charges and vowed to appeal the decision.

In conclusion, the sentencing of Success Masra has sparked a heated debate about the state of democracy in Chad and the role of political opposition. As the country moves forward, the international community must remain vigilant and advocate for democratic reforms to ensure a fair and just future for all Chadians.
