The 153rd British Open has commenced at the picturesque Royal Portrush golf course, with hometown favourite Rory McIlroy starting his day late. This marks the third time the prestigious tournament has been held at the course, which was founded in 1888.

The last time the British Open was held at Royal Portrush was in 2019, a year that saw Irishman Shane Lowry deliver a spectacular performance to claim his first and only major title. Lowry carded a course-record 63 on Saturday and won by six strokes over Tommy Fleetwood.

This year's event has been graced by the presence of two-time tournament champion Padraig Harrington, who struck the first tee shot of the tournament using an iron. The North Atlantic wind was present during the opening shot, and deep sand traps were placed on either side of the fairway to add an extra challenge.

The day kicked off early with Scottie Scheffler, the two-time defending PGA champion and current world number one, teeing off in the morning. Defending British Open champion Xander Schauffele also started his round early. However, McIlroy, aiming to complete his career Grand Slam, teed off later in the day.

The packed stands and noisy spectators have added to the excitement of the tournament, creating an electric atmosphere. The final group is expected to finish their round around 9:30 PM, making it a long but thrilling day of golf.

As the sun sets over Royal Portrush, all eyes will be on McIlroy as he chases the coveted "claret jug." The British Open at Royal Portrush promises to be a memorable event, with the potential for history in the making.
