Venus Williams Makes a Notable Comeback at Age 45

Venus Williams, at 45 years old, is making a significant comeback on the professional tennis tour, becoming the oldest woman to win a WTA singles match since Martina Navratilova in 2004. This remarkable feat was achieved at the Mubadala Citi Open in Washington DC, where she defeated the world No. 35 Peyton Stearns in straight sets (6-3, 6-4).

Williams' career achievements are nothing short of impressive. She has won 7 Grand Slam singles titles, 14 Grand Slam doubles titles (many with her sister Serena Williams), and earned 5 Olympic medals—4 golds and 1 silver. In addition, she has won a total of 49 singles titles and 22 doubles titles throughout her illustrious career.

In 2007, Williams made history as the first female Wimbledon singles champion to receive equal pay as the men's winner. Her Olympic gold medals were won in singles (2000 Sydney) and women's doubles (2000 Sydney, 2008 Beijing, 2012 London), and she won a silver medal in mixed doubles at the 2016 Rio Olympics. Over her career, she has earned approximately $46 million in prize money.

Despite facing severe health issues for many years, including anemia, debilitating pain, heavy bleeding, and unusually frequent menstrual cycles, Williams has persevered and continues to compete at the highest level. Her health struggles affected her tennis and her career, but she has managed to overcome them and make a notable comeback.

As she prepares for the 2025 US Open, Williams has received a wildcard entry and is competing there. This continues her late-career resurgence with the goal of adding to her legacy and pursuing titles not yet captured, such as a mixed doubles championship. Williams expresses great joy in returning to high-level competition and remains a prominent figure for her impact on women's tennis both on and off the court.

Williams is also an advocate for self-advocacy in health matters. She was misdiagnosed and not treated for years, and she had a myoma removed during her operation, which took place a year ago. Despite being told she was inoperable and could bleed out on the operating table, Williams persevered and is now healthier than ever.

The US Open takes place from August 24 to September 7 in New York, and Williams is allowed to compete in the 2022 US Open. She has won the US Open in 2000 and 2001, and she will be the oldest singles participant since Renee Richards, who competed at the US Open in 1981 at the age of 47.

Williams' sister, Serena Williams, no longer plays tennis, but Venus continues to inspire many through both her enduring athleticism and her role in advancing gender equality in the sport. Her comeback at age 45 serves as a testament to her resilience and determination, and she remains a force to be reckoned with on the tennis court.
