Farewell to Groundbreaking Curator Koyo Kouoh, First African Woman to Lead Venice Art Biennale
Sad news hits the art world as Swiss-Cameroonian curator Koyo Kouoh, known for shattering barriers, has passed away at 58.
On Saturday, her home institution, the Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa (Zeitz MOCAA), announced her passing via an Instagram post without disclosing the cause. The Venice Art Biennale expressed its "deep sadness" over the loss.
Born in 1967 in Cameroon, Kouoh made history as the first African woman invited to curate the prestigious Venice Art Biennale slated for 2026. Having served as Zietz MOCAA's executive director and chief curator since 2019, she was dedicated to promoting Pan-Africanism in the arts.
"With passion, intellectual rigor, and vision," Kouoh worked tirelessly on the conception and development of the Biennale Arte 2026, as stated by La Biennale. The presentation of the exhibition's title and theme was scheduled for May 20.
Kouoh gained increased recognition through the pioneering 2022 exhibition "When We See Us: A Century of Black Figuration in Painting." Inspired by Ava DuVernay's thought-provoking Netflix series When They See Us, this groundbreaking show explored societal perceptions of Black youth.
Her passing leaves an immense void in the world of contemporary art and among the international community of artists, scholars, and curators influenced by her human and intellectual commitment.
Italy's Prime Minister, Giorgia Meloni, expressed her condolences, recognizing the significant void Kouoh's premature and sudden passing has left in the world of contemporary art.
As Kouoh's life and career come to a close, her extraordinary human and intellectual commitment to contemporary art will forever remain an inspiration.
