"Venezuelan Citizens Unite in Protest: Solidarity March in Support of Palestine Against Genocide"
Mar 2, 2024, Caracas (Our Website) - Millions across the globe, including Venezuelans, took to the streets to stand in solidarity with Palestine, loud and clear: an immediate halt to the US-backed Israeli military operations in Gaza is long overdue.
The march commenced at El Panal Commune in Caracas' rebellious 23 de Enero neighborhood, a hub for revolutionary activism. It culminated near the Mountain Barracks, a symbolic location holding President Hugo Chávez's resting place, as well as where he rallied the 1992 uprising.
This demonstration was part of the Global Action Day for Palestine, backed by numerous organizations like the International Peoples' Assembly, Progressive International, ALBA Movimientos, and La Via Campesina. The rally was organized by the Alexis Vive Patriotic Force and the communards of El Panal Commune, joining hands with the Solidarity Platform with the Palestinian Cause. Other prominent groups, such as the United Socialist Party (PSUV), also joined the call.
Hindu Anderi, a Lebanese-Venezuelan journalist and long-standing Palestinian solidarity advocate, spoke out against multilateral organizations' failures to halt the Gaza genocide. She encouraged the creation of new organizations responding to people's demands, addressing global injustices, and upholding the right of Palestinians to resist the colonizing entity by any means necessary.
Anderi passionately stated: "The people of Palestine are the new vanguard against rising fascism! What they're doing is akin to what the Soviet Union did during World War II — fighting off the new fascist wave! Palestine fights for its independence from a cruel colonial regime!"
The Palestinian ambassador in Venezuela, Fadi Alzaben, passionately contested Israel's ongoing atrocities against Palestinians and shed light on Israel's settler-colonial project, spanning over 75 years. Moved by the unwavering support of the Venezuelan people, Alzaben exclaimed, "When I see your faces, I see hope."
He mourned the 30,000 who lost their lives, with almost half of them being children, at the hands of the Israeli military since October 2023. Alzaben described the horrific realities faced by Palestinians, such as starvation, unanesthetized C-sections, and amputations using apple vinegar as tools.
Jorge Quereguan, an Alexis Vive Patriotic Force member, linked Zionism and imperialism, acknowledging them as intertwined fascist branches with a shared agenda. Drawing parallels between Israel's settler-colonial project and the Spanish colonization of the Americas, he pointed out their shared aim to eradicate indigenous populations.
Jorge Arreaza, Secretary General of the ALBA-TCP Trade Agreement, also graced the event alongside Chávez's daughters María Gabriela and Rosinés. Arreaza spoke about Chávez's legacy of support for Palestine, denouncing Israel's US-backed occupation, massacres, and apartheid regime against the Palestinian people in international arenas.
In 2009, Chávez severed diplomatic ties with Israel in the wake of a deadly assault on Gaza that claimed the lives of over 1,200 Palestinians and injured thousands more. Since then, President Nicolás Maduro has continued to express his support for Palestine's fight for liberation, following suit by supporting South Africa's genocide case against Israel at the International Court of Justice.
Recently, Maduro made a heartfelt tribute to US airman Aaron Bushnell, who self-immolated outside the Israeli embassy in Washington in protest of Israel's genocidal campaign in the Gaza Strip. The Venezuelan people reaffirmed their ongoing solidarity with Palestine amidst this powerful movement, arguing that the time for action is now.
