Obituary: Manfred Maute, Legendary Figure in Artistic Cycling, Passes Away at 85
Manfred Maute, a renowned figure in the world of artistic cycling, passed away on Saturday at the age of 85. Born in Tailfingen, Maute was a native of Albstadt and spent his formative years honing his skills as a mechanic at Albi.
Maute's contributions to artistic cycling were not limited to his competitive years. He went on to become a highly successful coach, training numerous world-class athletes. His coaching career culminated in him being awarded the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany in 2012.
Maute's competitive career was equally impressive. He participated in eight World Championships, winning the title in 1968, 1971, and 1972. His achievements as a competitor were matched by his success as a coach, with multiple world championship coaching stints under his belt.
Maute was married to Roswitha since March 1960, and together they had four children: Bernd, Beate, Karin, and Dieter. Dieter, his son, followed in his father's footsteps, becoming a state coach in 2003. Max, Dieter's son, also made waves in the cycling world, becoming vice-world champion at the Indoor Cycling World Championships in Stuttgart in 2021.
Maute was also a proud grandfather, with eight grandchildren. He is remembered for his humility, modesty, and strong sense of camaraderie.
The cycling world pays tribute to Maute's life's work. RSV Tailfingen, one of the most successful clubs in the world in artistic cycling, honors his life's work and considers his technical guidelines groundbreaking. The successes of the club are significantly based on Maute's work and conceptual ideas.
Maute's commitment to artistic cycling spanned several decades and shaped the sport. His influence extends beyond individual titles to shaping the sport through coaching excellence, likely contributing to the competitive standards and visibility of artistic cycling internationally.
The cycling club RSV Tailfingen and the cycling world at large mourn the loss of a true legend. Maute's legacy will live on in the hearts of those he inspired and in the annals of artistic cycling history.
