Tomas later discovered that the driver had accidentally started the car in gear, causing it to roll away.
Into the Depths"I tossed my brand-new phone aside and sprinted to her aid," Tomas explains. As he made his way halfway through the lagoon, the woman freed herself from the car, which continued barreling forward, pushing a pole in front of it.
Splendid Scenery, Tragic SettingDespite the vehicle being half submerged in the lagoon, Jökulsárlón remained a spectacle.
Rescue Mission"I waded into the lagoon, intending to save the vehicle and get it back on dry ground," Tomas reveals. He tried to shut down the engine to prevent further damages, but the car was already in gear and had an active handbrake, making it impossible to back it up from the lagoon. With his group of tourists waiting for him, Tomas had to abandon the rescue mission.
A Helping HandFortunately, an army of bystanders descended upon the scene, providing aid and likely calling for professional assistance to retrieve the stranded vehicle.
