Hospitals Across Saxony-Anhalt Embrace Diverse Dietary Needs

Hospitals in Saxony-Anhalt have seen a significant shift in patient dietary preferences, leading them to diversify their offerings to cater to a wider range of needs. "Patients' requests and expectations regarding food have significantly transformed over the years," revealed Thomas Moesta, Medical Director of Halle University Hospital, speaking to the German Press Agency. The growing popularity of vegan diets and the demand for halal food are driving this change.

Hospitals like Magdeburg University Hospital have been serving vegetarian and vegan meals in the canteen daily for several years. As of January 2024, they plan to extend this vegan menu to patient catering as well. However, cost constraints prevent the use of organic products at the moment, according to a hospital spokesperson.

Recognizing the changing times, the Helios hospital chain is focusing on organic, regional produce and less meat. Their lunch menu now includes dishes such as vegan chickpea curry and falafel balls, with organic pork making a small appearance in some bratwurst recipes, as suggested by a Helios spokesperson in Saxony-Anhalt. The chain operates eight hospitals in the state, including in Burg and Sangerhausen.

In response to this demand, Dessau's Municipal Hospital now ensures at least one vegetarian meal is available to patients daily and plans to expand its selection of light, healthier options later this year. Meanwhile, the Paul Gerhardt Stift in Wittenberg has introduced a buffet system, allowing patients to choose the quantity and components of their meals.

While the Johanniter Hospital in Stendal is open to catering to its patients' various religious needs, including halal, it has not yet given halal food a major role in its menu. However, a vegetarian dish is offered every day.

This shift towards diverse and healthier food options reflects the evolving dietary preferences of patients in Saxony-Anhalt. The Helios hospitals are embracing this change by placing a greater emphasis on organic and locally-sourced products, aiming to reduce meat consumption in the process.
