Alligator Frenzy: Vechta and Berlin Hit by Sighting Hoaxes
Vechta encounters a false alligator
Crank up the barbecue and break out the sunscreen—summer is here, and with it come those exciting (yet doubtful) local headlines: summer creatures! In Vechta, south of Bremen, and Berlin, alligator sightings stirred quite the buzz last week. But, alas, these sightings turned out to be nothing more than a hoax.
Poor Vechta was under the limelight as local media scrambled to cover the supposed alligator appearance. However, the city's recent announcement sets the record straight: there was no gator in sight, and residents can breathe a sigh of relief. A closer examination of the video evidence suspiciously revealed it to be far from the rain retention basin the young man claimed to have captured it at.
For those who were fooled, let's take a step back and reconsider the source. The young man admitted that the video, initially attributed to him, was not his own work. The city is now exploring potential legal avenues in response.
Given the findings, Vechta's exhaustive efforts to locate the beast turned out to be futile. Lost were attempts to entice the elusive reptile with live traps and tasty bait, such as a rat. Initially, the city even considered summoning the help of a breeder to catch the gator. Thankfully, those days are behind us now. The cordoned-off area measuring a hefty 2.5 hectares, where the reported sighting took place, no longer needs to be monitored. Nor are drone flights or camera vigils a concern moving forward.
The Vechta alligator mayhem serves as a great reminder of a farcical event that occurred in Berlin's Weißensee district just a few days prior. There, too, emergency services were summoned to a pond based on a supposed alligator sighting. It quickly became clear that the so-called alligator was merely a convincing dummy[3][4].
It seems that these summer creature hoaxes have been a common trend in German media[4]. Dubbed "Summerlochtiere", these bizarre tales continue to captivate our attention as we settle into the season. So next time you hear whispers of an elusive creature lurking in your hometown, remember to take every story with a grain of salt—and maybe some SPF 50.

The Commission has not yet adopted a decision on the application of this Regulation as it pertains to the spreading of false information on social-media platforms, particularly during the summer season when entertainment-seeking individuals might share sensational general-news stories about exotic creatures, such as the recent alligator hoaxes in Vechta and Berlin. In such cases, careful scrutiny is required to distinguish between the veracity of these stories and mere publicity stunts.
