Vatican protocols disregarded as unidentified nun secures private audience with Pope Francis

In a surprising turn of events during the final looks at Pope Francis' coffin by cardinals, bishops, and clerics on Wednesday, April 24, a woman identified as Geneviève Jeanningros, an old friend of the late pope, broke Vatican protocol by walking through the crowded nave of St. Peter's Basilica. Geneviève Jeanningros, a French nun of Argentine origin, was the only one allowed by the Vatican's protocol department to reach the ropes that marked the area close to the coffin. The incident was noted by media personnel present at the event. The woman, who approached Pope Francis' coffin, paused and gazed for a longer period than necessary, causing a stir among the large crowd that had gathered to pay their respects to the pope. Approximately 20,000 people visited St. Peter's Basilica on Wednesday, but Geneviève Jeanningros was the only one who was allowed close to the coffin. Pope Francis, who passed away on Easter Monday, April 21, due to a stroke at the age of 88, had a special bond with Geneviève Jeanningros. Their friendship spanned many years, and she was present at his funeral ceremonies. However, her current whereabouts are not publicly disclosed. Since Wednesday morning, about 48,600 people have paid a tribute to Pope Francis. The incident involving Geneviève Jeanningros occurred amid a long line of people who had been standing for hours to pay their respects to the pope. His funeral is scheduled for Saturday, April 26. This unconventional act by Geneviève Jeanningros has sparked discussions among the public and the media, adding a touch of mystery to an otherwise solemn event. The Vatican has not yet issued a statement regarding the incident.
