Forecast ahead: Florida to witness Saharan dust, stunning sunsets, and potential flooding

Get ready, Florida! Saharan dust, originating from the vast desert in North Africa, is set to arrive in your state by the end of the week, shining a light haze over the skies and slightly cooling off the temperatures. Although it's common for Florida this time of the year, the dust often paints picturesque sunsets.

Flooding could be a concern for you too, as a storm might dump up to 5 inches of rain in certain locations in Miami by Tuesday. South Florida is already experiencing heavy rain after flooding incidents took place in Miami and Tampa Bay on Monday. A flood watch is in effect for South Florida on Tuesday, and more flooding in Miami is possible.

Florida isn’t alone dealing with these meteorological challenges, as other regions of the country are under the threat of flooding as well. Over 16 million people in central Texas to western Illinois are in the storm zone, with damaging winds, large hail, and a flash flood threat along with the possibility of tornadoes expected Tuesday afternoon and into the evening.

Cities such as Dallas, Kansas City, Oklahoma City, Tulsa, Wichita, and Springfield, Missouri are among those at risk for flooding, with a tornado watch in effect for northern and Central Missouri until Tuesday evening. A severe thunderstorm watch is in effect for most of Oklahoma, including Oklahoma City.

In addition to the Saharan dust, wildfire smoke from Canada is worsening air quality in several U.S. states. Although the primary air quality impact this week is observed in northern states, the concurrent arrival of Saharan dust in the Southeast may compromise air quality in more than one region of the country.

While the Saharan dust might affect Florida’s air quality mildly, it will undoubtedly create scenic sunsets with brilliant reds, oranges, and pinks across the Southeast. On the other hand, parts of western Kansas and New Mexico have already experienced flooding due to storms that created wind gusts close to 80 mph and caused flooding in Albuquerque, potentially leading to a tragic death.

Stay tuned for further updates!

As the Saharan dust arrives in Florida, it might pose a minor impact on the state's air quality, yet promise captivating sunsets with vibrant hues. Meanwhile, health concerns may arise as heavy rain and flooding are anticipated, especially in South Florida and other regions from central Texas to western Illinois, where damaging winds, hail, and tornadoes are also forecasted.
