Vancouver's Downtown Eastside unites for free community dinner at Rogers Arena

Rogers Arena recently hosted Community Connect: Nourish the Neighbourhood, a free event that welcomed over 1,400 guests from Vancouver's Downtown Eastside. Organised by Canucks Sports & Entertainment (CSE) and the British Columbia Lottery Corporation (BCLC), the gathering focused on food, conversation, and community spirit.

The evening brought together current and former Canucks players, volunteers, and local not-for-profits to share a meal and strengthen connections.

The event centred around a shared dinner, with A Better Life Foundation preparing 2,000 meals for attendees. Other participating organisations included YWCA Crabtree Corner, Lookout Housing, and the Greater Vancouver Food Bank, all helping to create a welcoming environment.

Over 150 volunteers from CSE and BCLC assisted throughout the night. Canucks alumni and players spent time with guests, signing autographs, posing for photos, and chatting about hockey. Many attendees had also come the previous year, returning with excitement for another night of food and camaraderie. CSE President Michael Doyle spoke about the importance of community ties, noting the shared values between his organisation and BCLC. Meanwhile, BCLC President & CEO Pat Davis reinforced the event's mission to foster human connection through initiatives like this one. The atmosphere remained lively, with laughter and conversation filling the arena.

The evening highlighted the impact of collaboration between sports teams, charities, and volunteers. Over 1,400 people enjoyed a meal, company, and a sense of belonging. No further joint community projects between CSE and BCLC have been announced beyond their existing partnership on sports betting and event promotions.
