Vancouver hockey team extends contract of AHL head coach Malhotra for another season
In a significant move, the Vancouver Canucks have extended Manny Malhotra's contract as head coach of their American Hockey League team, the Abbotsford Canucks, through the 2026-27 season.
Malhotra took over as Abbotsford's head coach last season and led the team to a remarkable season. The Abbotsford Canucks finished the regular season with a record of 44-24-2-2, and Malhotra guided them to a 16-8 playoff run that culminated in the franchise's first-ever Calder Cup title.
The Canadian Press reports that Malhotra was a top contender to replace Rick Tocchet as Vancouver's head coach in April. However, he decided to continue his successful tenure with the Abbotsford Canucks.
Malhotra's work has been highly praised by the Canucks' general manager, Patrik Allvin. Allvin stated that Malhotra has done a great job teaching, communicating with, and developing the team's players in the AHL.
Before his coaching career, Malhotra played in the NHL, suiting up for seven teams over 16 seasons. He has amassed 295 points (116 goals, 179 assists) over 991 regular-season games in the NHL. Malhotra also worked as an assistant coach in the NHL for both the Vancouver Canucks and Toronto Maple Leafs.
Meanwhile, in the NHL playoffs, the Toronto Maple Leafs and Florida Panthers are playing in Game 7 of their series. The Leafs are looking to finish the series at home, while the Panthers are hoping to bounce back after the benching of one of their executives over 'inappropriate' social media comments.
As for the Maple Leafs, Brendan Shanahan is no longer their president. The exact reasons for his departure are not clear at this time.
