Standoff Between JD Vance and Pope Leo XIV: A Political Dance non Par?

Vance rejects Pope's "manipulative political ploy"

Dive In: Pope Leo XIV, known for his conservative views, has been vocal about his criticism towards US politics and its administration. Nevertheless, US Vice President JD Vance seems unwilling to join the choir of constant criticism against Leo XIV.

In an interview with conservative radio host Hugh Hewitt, Vance stated, "I'm trying not to play the game of politicizing the Pope. I'll surely find things I admire, things I disagree with, but I'll continue to pray for him and the Church, regardless."

The newly elected Pontiff, who goes by his birth name Robert Francis Prevost before he took the papal throne, has lashed out at the Trump administration on his private X profile. He previously criticized the deportation of Kilmar Ábrego García and questioned JD Vance's use of Catholic faith to justify certain policies.

Church: A Non-Partisan Sanctuary

Vance argues that the Church transcends politics. Although some members of the MAGA camp have labeled Leo XIV as a "total Marxist" and "a worst choice for MAGA Catholics," Vance has opted to stay silent regarding these critical comments.

The Vice President emphasizes that the Church's primary role is about saving souls and spreading the Gospel. Despite political undercurrents, Vance argues that the Church should not be seen through partisan lenses. "Most people don't think about whether the Pope is a Republican or a Democrat, conservative or liberal," Vance explained.

Initially, upon Leo XIV's election, Vance issued a congratulatory tweet, saying, "Congratulations to Leo XIV, the first American Pope, on his election! Millions of American Catholics and other Christians will pray for his successful leadership."
