No Godfather for Ozigbo: Disputing the Role of Peter Obi
"Valentine Ozigbo Denies Peter Obi as His Godfather"
Valentine Ozigbo, erstwhile chieftain of the Labour Party and contender for the party's 2023 presidential ticket, has categorically denied ever having Peter Obi as his godfather. This assertion was made during an interview with Channels Television on a Friday.
Before his recent switch to the All Progressives Congress (APC), Ozigbo had unsuccessfully battled for their ticket in the 2025 Anambra State governorship election.
Contrary to speculations, Ozigbo insists he doesn't require a godfather to chart his political course. "I don't have a godfather, I've never had one. I have friends, I have mentors, I have leaders." He continued, explaining that his decision to enter politics was his own, self-funded endeavor: "I spent almost eighty per cent of the funds."
When probed further regarding Peter Obi's role in his political journey, Ozigbo made it clear: "Peter Obi has never been my godfather." He elaborated, stating that if Obi were indeed his godfather, he would be financing his pursuits. However, he added that this isn't the case.
Ozigbo pays his respects to Obi as a respected leader, a former Governor who exhibited laudable performance, but maintains Peter Obi doesn't fund his projects.
In an unexpected move, Ozigbo has filed a lawsuit at the Federal High Court in Awka, questioning the legitimacy of the APC governorship primary held on April 5, 2025. The court battle pits him against the APC, Nicholas Ukachukwu, and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
Ozigbo's legal team, led by Umeh Kalu, SAN, and B.C. Igwilo, SAN, seeks to invalidate Ukachukwu's nomination and compel the party to acknowledge Ozigbo as the rightful candidate for the upcoming November 2025 governorship election.
