Valencian Government seeks a suitable location to establish a "crisis" center for the care of unaccompanied minor migrants
The Balearic Islands autonomous community has been chosen to take over 571 unaccompanied minors from the Canary Islands, as the central government announced recently. The Valencian Community, however, has been excluded from this system due to its refusal to participate in the redistribution plan for unaccompanied migrant minors.
The Ministry of Social Rights, Equality, and Housing made this decision based on the solidarity obligation and technical criteria set by the government. The Valencian Community has not been a part of the process as it declined to participate in the plan.
It's important to note that these minors did not arrive in the Valencian Community via pateras or from other centres. Instead, some have been registered at police stations in Gandia, Zapadores, and other Valencia stations. These minors hail from countries such as Somalia, Senegal, Gambia, Guinea, Morocco, and Algeria.
Interestingly, these minors are registered by the Government as part of the adult quotas being transferred to the Peninsula, not the unaccompanied minors quota. This has raised concerns among local authorities, who question why less saturated communities like Catalonia and the Basque Country have not received minors from the Government.
The Council has expressed absolute solidarity with the humanitarian crisis situation in the Canary Islands, where the Government intends to transfer 571 minors to the Valencian Community and other areas of Spain. However, they are concerned that it is impossible to attend to these minors with the dignity they deserve due to the continuous arrival of these people. The rate of entry of minors into the system is approximately 20 minors every eight days.
The Government is facing criticism for trying to shift its responsibility to the autonomous communities without fulfilling its duty to accommodate the 1.200 unaccompanied minors who sought asylum. The Balearic Islands, despite being a 'welcoming region', are also questioning the Government's decision, especially considering the strain it will put on their autonomy.
