With the soaring popularity of 'vaccine passports', businesses might request customers to present their vaccination proof before entering. It is essential to securely store and manage your vaccination information digitally to prevent losing your paper vaccination card.

Many U.S. states have digital vaccine registration systems, so check your state's guidelines.

Utilize State-Approved Services

Some states allow residents to access digital vaccine records: Arizona, Louisiana, Maryland, Mississippi, North Dakota, Washington, West Virginia, and D.C., through the free MyIR Mobile service; California users can access their records via ; and New Yorkers can use the Excelsior Pass app, which we will discuss as an example.

Using the Excelsior Pass

  1. Visit and provide your personal details.
  2. After verifying your identity, use your own QR code to obtain the pass. You can add this digital pass to the Excelsior Pass app for iPhone and Android or print a physical copy.

Users of the Excelsior Pass and California's My Vaccine Record receive a QR code that businesses can scan to confirm vaccinated customers. However, these services are limited to respective states. If you didn't get vaccinated in one of these areas, you cannot access your records through these apps.

Trusted Apps

This option is available through various methods: if you reside in California or New York, scan your card directly or upload a QR code; if your vaccine was administered at a Walmart pharmacy, use your Walmart account; or log in to your preferred health care provider's site.
  3. If scanning a vaccination card, position it within the designated camera boundaries. Snap a picture when the app prompts you, then input the vaccine name, dosage date, and administration location.
  4. The app generates a scannable QR code for that displays your vaccination status.

Scan Your Vaccine Card Using Your Phone

If your state does not offer an app for confirming the vaccine status, Wall Street Journal's Nicole Nguyen suggests scanning your vaccine card with your phone camera. Both iPhones and Androids have built-in document scanning features.

iPhone Users

  1. Open the Notes app.
  2. Create a new note labeled 'Covid-19 Vaccination.'
  3. Tap the camera button, then select 'Scan Documents.' Position the camera over your vaccination card until it focuses and scans. Save the image by tapping the circular button in the center.
  4. The iPhone recognizes the scanned document as your vaccine card, saving the image and its metadata.

Android Users

  1. Install the Google Drive app.
  2. Tap 'Add' and then 'Scan.'
  3. Position your camera over the vaccination card until it scans. After scanning, press 'Save.'

Digital vaccination passes are likely the most convenient way to prove your vaccination status and your return to normalcy.
