Vacation hotspot Gangneung faces water scarcity during peak tourist season

In the picturesque town of Gangneung, Gangwon, authorities are taking drastic measures to conserve water due to critically low levels in the Obong Reservoir. According to reports by YONHAP, the low inflow has left the reservoir in a precarious state as of July 20.

To combat this water shortage, ongoing water conservation campaigns have been initiated. These efforts include the closure of pools and public warnings about potential restrictions on household water use. If the reservoir levels drop below 25 percent, these restrictions are expected to become inevitable, and public restrooms at popular locations like Gyeongpo Beach may be closed to conserve water.

Emergency water supply efforts are also underway. The Gangwon Fire Headquarters has delivered a significant volume of water - 202 tons - to Gangneung as part of broader emergency responses addressing the drought across the province. Authorities are urging residents and vacationers to cooperate in enduring this crisis, framing it as a matter of survival.

The situation at the Obong Reservoir has led to visible changes in the landscape. Near the upper stream area of the reservoir, exposed ground is now visible, a stark reminder of the severity of the water shortage.

At Gyeongpo Beach, signs encouraging water conservation can be seen at facilities such as shower stations and public restrooms. Even the beach's foot-washing station near a public restroom serves as a testament to the ongoing efforts to conserve every drop of water.

While this crisis does not seem to be linked to international events such as the Thames Water hosepipe ban, the summer job drought, Korean fish farmers' struggles, or the flooded Filipino wedding, it underscores the importance of water conservation in times of scarcity.
