Uznach's Burgerfeldweg finally gets long-overdue repairs after years of neglect
Burgerfeldweg in Uznach is set for improvements after years of neglect. The path, now heavily used by pedestrians and cyclists heading to Migros and Aldi, has fallen into poor condition. Overgrown grass, waterlogging, and crumbling surfaces have made travel difficult for regular users.
The Burger Corporation will lead the renovation work. Plans include clearing overgrown vegetation, removing old debris, and laying fresh gravel. Aging fruit trees along the route will also be replaced.
At present, the path consists of just two narrow, uneven tracks. Large sections often flood after rain, leaving users with few alternatives. The relocation of nearby stores has pushed more people toward Burgerfeldweg, increasing wear on the already struggling surface. While the road is classified as a third-class municipal route, maintenance legally falls to the landowner. Despite no formal obligation, the municipal council has agreed to contribute up to CHF 16,000 plus VAT for materials. Officials view this as a temporary fix rather than a long-term solution. No public records exist comparing recent pedestrian and cyclist numbers on Burgerfeldweg to other local routes. The decision to fund the project comes without detailed usage data from previous years.
Work will focus on widening the path, improving drainage, and replacing worn-out features. The council's financial support ensures the project can move forward, though future upkeep remains the landowner's responsibility. The upgrades aim to make the route safer and more accessible for daily shoppers and commuters.
