Uzbekistan’s Bold Plan to Slash Air Pollution and Overhaul Waste Systems

Uzbekistan has launched a comprehensive environmental reform to address air pollution and waste management. The government’s plan includes stricter emission controls, innovative waste-to-energy projects, and the closure of outdated landfills across all regions. Recent air-quality studies revealed severe pollution in Tashkent, with 40% of airborne dust attributed to human activity. In response, President Shavkat Mirziyoyev directed environmental and regional authorities to enhance emission monitoring and enforce higher air-quality standards. The reforms aim to reduce pollution, reclaim land, and enhance waste management across Uzbekistan. With firm deadlines and substantial funding, the government anticipates noticeable improvements in air quality and environmental safety by 2026.
