Get Ready for a Thrilling Showdown at the 2025 UTMB Circuit!
The anticipated 2025 season of the UTMB circuit is about to start, with a jaw-dropping lineup for the men's finals at Mont Blanc! Top contenders Kilian Jornet, Jim Walmsley, and Vincent Bouillard are set to lock horns in the UTMB Ultra Trail Chianti Castles 120k race in Italy on March 22, marking the first time these three powerhouses will start together.
The race is a grueling 74.5-mile journey that starts and ends in the picturesque Tuscan commune of Radda in Chianti, with the runners navigating through rugged, mountainous terrain that gains over 5,200 meters in elevation. That's around 17,000ft - half of the climb they face in Chamonix, so you can bet your boots these athletes won't be dawdling!
Spain's own Kilian Jornet last competed in the UTMB finals in 2022, shattering records and becoming the first runner to finish a lap around Mont Blanc under 20 hours. Since then, he's been making waves in his Nnormal Kjerag Brut shoes, like by climbing all 82 4,000m Alpine peaks in just 19 days! It's no surprise he's the bookies' favorite to win in Chianti.
Jornet's record was bested by Arizona's Jim Walmsley just one year later, as he sheered off another 12 minutes from Jornet's time while wearing the Hoka Tecon X 3s. Last year, Walmsley didn't finish the race, but he'd already set an impressive new course record at Western States in June, so we can cut him some slack! Recent footage shows that he smashed the Mesquite Canyons 50k last weekend at a breakneck pace, so he's clearly been prepping hard.
French engineer Vincent Bouillard burst onto the scene out of nowhere last year, sprinting to the finish line under the 20-hour mark in Chamonix. While he doesn't have as much long-distance experience as the other two, he's been keeping his followers updated about his cross-country training preparations, hinting at a potential dark horse contender.
There's one small catch - Kilian Jornet's partner is expecting a baby any day now, which he's mentioned on Instagram might affect his preparations.
"Training has been going great this winter, but sometimes life has other plans!" says Jornet, crossing his fingers for a baby that will allow him to race for a golden ticket to Western States.
