Utah sports arena expansion: Proposed plans by Jazz and Utah Hockey Club owners to boost seating capacity
🏒 Renovation Time for Utah's Hockey and Basketball Arenas 🏀
Embrace the change! The powerhouses behind the NHL's Utah Hockey Club and the NBA's Jazz are set to enhance their downtown Salt Lake City home, promising a enlarged seating capacity for both sports spectacles. Here's the scoop on the anticipated transformation!
Last week, Smith Entertainment Group (SEG) unveiled their long-awaited revamp plan for the arena, following a meeting with the Salt Lake City Council. The initial phase this summer aims to boost the number of full-ice view seats by 1,400, with 1,000 new seats and 400 upgrades from the team's first season in the city.
"Year 1 will bring a remarkable improvement in lower-bowl seating for hockey fans," Jim Olson, the Jazz president, shared on a video call with reporters.
To accommodate a new, retractable seating system and install a fresh ice floor slab, the arena floor is elevated by two feet and elongated by approximately 12 feet at each end. This grand scale overhaul ensures a stunning hockey experience, where every seat boasts an unobstructed view of the rink.
"The venue, initially built for basketball, didn't mesh well with the size of an ice sheet," Olson explained. "With the geometry wearisome, we devised a riser system and raised the floor by two feet to strike the perfect balance between basketball and hockey experiences."
Construction timeline you ask? The renovation spans a total of three summers, oozing plenty of time for fans to savor the anticipation.
The expected revelation of the new NHL team's identity has been a buzzing topic, considering their relocation from Arizona, bought by the Smiths. Although the placeholder name "Utah Hockey Club" still stands, a permanent moniker is anticipated before the next season.
Three contenders emerged from a fan vote, with "Utah Mammoth" claiming the top spot. SEG's Mike Maughan reassured fans that progress continues on exploring these finalists, with an announcement imminent ahead of the 25-26 NHL season.
While the inspirations behind the voting process remain ambiguous, fans flocked to platforms like TikTok to express their innovative team name suggestions. Nonetheless, we're eagerly waiting for the official unveiling of the Utah Mammoth and their inaugural season!
