USA Fencing Under Scrutiny: House Subcommittee Launches Inquiry Regarding Transgender Policy

The DOGE House Subcommittee, led by Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA), has jumped into the fray, announcing an investigation into USA Fencing due to its continued policy of allowing males to compete in female categories. This decision follows Rep. Greene's concerns over the organization allegedly flouting President Trump's executive order banning males from participating in girls' and women's sports.

On Wednesday, the committee will hold a hearing titled "Unfair Play: Keeping Men out of Women's Sports." The announcement reads, "The DOGE House Subcommittee's investigation into USA Fencing is long overdue. Let's be clear: Allowing biological males to dominate women's sports isn't 'inclusivity'-it's systemic fraud."

USA Fencing found itself in hot water last month when Stephanie Turner, a female athlete, refused to participate in a women's fencing bout against Redmond Sullivan, a 'transgender woman' and biological male. Turner voiced her protest by taking a knee, ultimately resulting in a "black card" - the most severe penalty in fencing - and her disqualification from the tournament. Turner commented that the organization's policy was the reason for her drastic actions.

"They have a very strange policy where you have to be living within your identity for a year before you register [in the women's category]. But there are no claims about whether you have to be on any sort of hormone treatment or testosterone suppression at all. You just have to be living in this identity," she said.

Underneath the headlines, USA Fencing's policies regarding transgender and non-binary athletes have entered a transitional phase. The current policy allows athletes to compete according to their gender identity, with the proposed revised policy mandating participation based on biological sex. However, the revised policy will only be implemented if oversight bodies such as the USOPC, IOC, FIE, IPC, or U.S. federal law mandate it.

Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) has weighed in on the debate, sending a letter to the governing body demanding the retracting of its current policy and putting an end to males competing in women’s fencing. USA Fencing has yet to respond to requests for comment on the upcoming hearing.

As pressure mounts on USA Fencing to prioritize safety and fairness for female athletes, it remains to be seen whether the organization will make the necessary changes to end the controversy. Some argue that the organization's commitment to ideology over reality is keeping USA Fencing from making common-sense decisions.

Notes:

  • USA Fencing’s current eligibility policy allows athletes to compete according to their gender identity.
  • The proposed revised policy would require athletes to compete based on their biological sex and will only be implemented if mandated by oversight bodies or U.S. federal law.
  • Critics argue that allowing biological males in women’s categories may create unfair advantages and compromise the safety and integrity of women’s sports.
  • Some lawmakers contend that USA Fencing is violating federal law and failing to fulfill its duties under the Ted Stevens Olympic and Amateur Sports Act by allowing biological males to compete in women’s events.
  • There is a continuous debate on inclusivity, respect for identity, fairness, safety concerns, legal and statutory obligations, and congressional oversight in this issue.
