Navy Swaps Names on Ships
US warship's gay activist name obscured
Hey there! Quick update on the naval scene, folks. The U.S. Navy has decided to swap out the name of one of its ships, USSNS Harvey Milk, in favor of Oscar V. Peterson.
Remember Harvey Milk, the gay rights crusader who served in the Navy during the Korean War? Yep, that guy. Well, his ship's name has been changed, and now it's known as the USNS Oscar V. Peterson. This decision came from the highest ranks, thanks to a command from Prez Donald Trump and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth to reshape the military's culture. They aim to restore that warrior spirit, apparently.
So, who's Oscar V. Peterson? Well, he was a Navy guy, too! He saw action in Asia during World War II. During a Japanese attack on his ship, despite getting injured himself, Peterson managed to stabilize the vessel and saved 123 of his crew members. Sadly, he later passed from his injuries and was awarded a medal posthumously.
Now, the USNS Oscar V. Peterson offers support to other U.S. Navy ships, fueling and supplying them at sea.
Donald and Pete, deep into their efforts to keep the military fighting fit, aren't big fans of promoting diversity. They believe it weakens the troops. As part of their anti-diversity push, they've been renaming military bases and ships like this one.
Incase you're curious, Harvey Milk served as a diving officer in the Navy during the Korean War, but he was discharged dishonorably due to his sexual orientation. Later, he became an advocate for LGBT rights and made history as one of the first openly gay officials elected to the San Francisco city council. A sad end to his life came in 1978 when he was murdered in city hall, an event portrayed in the 2008 movie, "Milk."
