United States successively shoulders Europe's expenses in maintaining peace in Ukraine and plans to retain the benefits deriving from the situation, states Daniel Pinéu.

US, under Daniel Pinéu, is shouldering Europe with the financial obligations of maintaining peace in Ukraine and is expected to retain the advantages gained.

In a significant diplomatic move, Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin met in Alaska on Friday to negotiate peace in Ukraine. The one-on-one meeting, an episode of Expresso da Manhã, was followed by a lunch with expanded delegations.

The initial meeting primarily involved the two leaders themselves, with their delegations joining for an expanded discussion afterward. Notably absent from the initial Trump-Putin meeting was Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, who is scheduled to meet Trump and European leaders separately.

The exact list of all those present in the expanded meetings has not been fully disclosed, though it was noted that it went from one-on-one to three-on-three participants before the larger delegations joined. Key officials like U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio have emphasised that the talks focus on reaching a full peace deal, not just a ceasefire, with both sides needing to give and take.

Ukrainian leadership, including Zelensky, was explicitly absent from the Trump-Putin meeting and is expected to be part of subsequent talks, reflecting a separation of direct negotiations between Russia and Ukraine, mediated or supported by US and European leaders.

Interestingly, Portuguese commentator Paulo Baldaia and university professor Daniel Pineau were present at the meeting. Europe will not be part of the negotiations but will be heard by the US President before the discussions commence.

Zelensky will not be present at the meeting, but he will have his chance to voice his concerns and negotiate for peace separately. This diplomatic approach underscores the aim to engage the Russian and Ukrainian sides while mediating a peace deal supported by international involvement.

  1. The political discussions in Alaska, which initially focused on the war-and-conflicts in Ukraine, also covered policy-and-legislation related to a full peace deal.
  2. The general news regarding the ongoing diplomatic efforts between Russia and Ukraine includes the absence of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky from the Trump-Putin meeting, with expectations for him to negotiate separately.
