US Secures Release of Amir Amiri from Taliban Detention in Afghanistan
The USA has secured the release of another citizen from Taliban detention in Afghanistan. Amir Amiri, held since December 2024, was freed on Sunday and will return to the USA after a brief stop in Doha for medical checks. This follows the release of two Americans in January and another, George Glezmann, in March.
Amiri's release was welcomed by US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who described it as 'wrongful detention'. He was handed over to Adam Boehler, the US special envoy on hostages, during Boehler's visit to Afghanistan in March. This follows a series of releases, including two Americans in January and a British couple, Peter and Barbie Reynolds, a week ago.
The Reynolds were arrested in February and held in various facilities before being transferred to intelligence services. Despite these releases, at least one other US citizen, Mahmood Habibi, remains in detention in Afghanistan.
Amiri's release is a positive development, but the USA continues to work for the freedom of other citizens held in Afghanistan. His return to the USA after medical checks in Doha will provide relief to his family and loved ones.
