US President Donald Trump announces peace between Armenia and Azerbaijan

On Friday, August 8, 2025, a historic peace agreement was signed at the White House in Washington, DC, marking a significant step towards ending decades of conflict over Nagorno-Karabakh. The agreement was brokered by the United States and witnessed by former US President Donald Trump, who expressed his excitement about the event on his Truth Social platform.

The peace agreement, signed by the respective leaders Nikol Pashinyan of Armenia and Ilham Aliyev of Azerbaijan, represents a breakthrough following nearly four decades of violent clashes. Azerbaijan successfully reclaimed full control over Nagorno-Karabakh in a military campaign in 2023.

The deal establishes full normalization of relations, mutual recognition of sovereignty and territorial integrity, and the inviolability of borders consistent with the 1991 Alma-Ata Declaration. The agreement has received broad international acclaim, with regional neighbours like Russia and Georgia, as well as global institutions such as the EU and the UN, welcoming it as a step towards lasting stability and development in the Caucasus.

However, Iran has expressed concerns and stated it will block a planned corridor included in the agreement due to fears of foreign intervention near its borders.

US President Trump also announced that he will host the heads of state of Azerbaijan and Armenia at the White House for an "official ceremony to sign a peace agreement." Additionally, the US will sign bilateral economic agreements with both Azerbaijan and Armenia, according to Trump.

The main bone of contention between Armenia and Azerbaijan has been the border region of Nagorno-Karabakh, a dispute that has caused countless casualties and displaced thousands of people over the years. With the signing of this peace agreement, there is hope for a more peaceful and stable future for the people of the Caucasus.

Despite this historic milestone, some regional tensions, especially involving Iran, remain unresolved. However, the signing of this peace agreement marks a crucial milestone towards peace between Armenia and Azerbaijan over Nagorno-Karabakh.

  1. The community and cooperation policies of the United States, as displayed in brokering the Nagorno-Karabakh peace agreement, could serve as a model for addressing other global conflicts, showcasing the significant role of politics in resolving general-news issues.
  2. With the signing of the Nagorno-Karabakh peace agreement, the cooperation policies between Azerbaijan and Armenia are expected to foster a more peaceful and stable environment in the Caucasus, potentially leading to a general improvement in the region's politics and news landscape.
