Former US President Donald Trump's elder sister, Maryanne Trump Barry, passed away at the age of 86. This tragic news was shared by several US media outlets on Monday morning, with ABC reporting that emergency services were called due to a heart attack in her Manhattan apartment. Barry served as a judge at the appeals court in New Jersey until 2019, following appointments by Ronald Reagan and Bill Clinton.

Born on April 5, 1937, in New York City, Barry earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Mount Holyoke College in 1958 and a Master of Arts from Columbia University in 1962. She completed her legal studies with a Juris Doctor from Hofstra University School of Law in 1974, and her early career included serving as an Assistant U.S. Attorney in New Jersey from 1974 to 1983, rising through the ranks to become Chief of the Appeals Division and First Assistant U.S. Attorney.

Following her appointment by President Reagan in 1983, Barry served as a US District Court Judge for the District of New Jersey for 16 years. President Clinton then nominated her to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit in 1999, a position she held until her retirement in 2019. Known for her independent judicial philosophy and significant legal precedents, Barry served as the Chief Judge of the Third Circuit Court from 2006 to 2011.

Donald Trump, who was President from 2017 to 2021 and is currently seeking re-election, did not initially comment on the passing of his sister. Barry had publicly criticized her brother, calling him a liar "without principles" in recordings released in 2020[1]. Trump refused to make any comments.

Mourners across the US have expressed their sadness at Barry's death and acknowledged the significant impact she had on the US judicial system during her distinguished career.
