US Intelligence: Russians Are Suffering Major War Casualties
Estimates of Russian casualties in Ukraine vary widely, but recent reports from US intelligence agencies suggest that the situation is dire for Putin's forces. According to these estimates, a staggering 315,000 Russian soldiers have been injured or killed since the start of the war in February 2022.
This figure, citing declassified documents from US intelligence agencies, represents a significant loss of almost 87% of Russia's pre-war military force, which numbered around 360,000 soldiers. It's important to note that independent analysis suggests that these losses may be even higher.
The high casualty rate has taken a toll on Russia's modernization efforts, setting them back by an estimated 15 years, according to reports. However, Russian forces have recently reported some successes on the battlefield.
Meanwhile, British intelligence estimates that around 70,000 Russians have been killed in the conflict, including 50,000 regular soldiers and 20,000 members of the Wagner private army. This estimate also includes around 180,000 to 240,000 wounded soldiers and 40,000 injured Wagner fighters.
The United States is a key supporter of Ukraine in its fight against Russia, and recent hostilities have resulted in a call for further US military aid. Although the Republicans have temporarily rejected President Biden's request for $61.4 billion in aid, Ukraine will continue to need weapons and ammunition to face the ongoing hostilities.
Additional Insights:
- Mediazona, an independent Russian media outlet, and the BBC estimate that around 85,000 Russian military personnel have died since the full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. However, they admit that these figures may be underestimates.
- The constant flow of losses, reportedly around 1,200 soldiers per week, has significantly impacted Russia's military capabilities. This is due to the loss of skilled personnel and senior commanders.
- The psychological impact of such high casualties cannot be underestimated. It has resulted in decreased morale, a reduced willingness to engage in combat, and increased desertion rates, weakening the Russian military further.
