US Government Shutdown Returns, White House Clock Changes

The US government is currently in its first shutdown since 2018. This comes after a period of relative calm, with the previous shutdown in 2018 being the longest in history at that time. The current shutdown has seen a change in the appearance of the White House's government shutdown clock on its website.

Looking back, in 2013, then-private citizen Donald Trump expressed his views on government shutdowns. On Fox News, he stated that the president bears the responsibility for resolving such issues. He also took to Twitter, asserting that 'a shutdown would of never happen' if he were in office. Ironically, when the 2018 shutdown occurred, Trump was the president. This shutdown lasted for 35 days, making it the longest in US history at that time.

Trump's stance on government shutdowns has evolved over time. In 2011, he described a potential shutdown as a 'tremendously negative mark on the President of the United States'. However, as president in 2018, he took a different approach, emphasizing that the pressure was on him to resolve the issue.

The current government shutdown is a reminder of the 2018 event, which was the longest in US history at that time. The White House's shutdown clock now displays a different appearance, reflecting the ongoing situation. Despite his past statements, former President Trump, who was in office during the 2018 shutdown, has emphasized the president's role in resolving such issues.
