US Expresses Congratulations to Switzerland on 1st August, Overlooks Trade Dispute

The US-Switzerland trade dispute, which has been ongoing for an unspecified period, has taken a turn for the worse as no breakthroughs or agreements have been reached amidst the Swiss National Day celebrations.

Despite intense negotiations and a draft Memorandum of Understanding approved by Switzerland on July 4, 2025, a final agreement could not be reached before the US deadline of August 1, 2025, at 6 a.m. CET expired. This failure to reach an agreement has resulted in the US imposing steep tariffs of 39% on Swiss imports, effective early August 2025. This rate is higher than the initially proposed 31% rate earlier in the year.

The Swiss government, expressing "great regret" over the US's unilateral tariff hike, emphasizes that their approach has been constructive and aimed at a negotiated solution compliant with Swiss law and international obligations. The Swiss authorities are currently analyzing the new situation to decide on the next steps.

The tariffs target a broad range of Swiss imports, except for pharmaceuticals, which constitute 60% of Swiss exports to the US and are exempted. However, other sectors like machinery, metalworking, and watches will face significantly higher duties, adversely affecting the Swiss economy. It's worth noting that the US remains an essential market for Switzerland, accounting for about 18% of Swiss exports in the previous year.

The diplomatic relationship between the US and Switzerland, which dates back over two centuries, seems to have been somewhat unaffected. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio sent a letter wishing the Swiss people a happy National Day, despite the ongoing trade dispute.

The Federal Council, the Swiss government, had hoped for a breakthrough in the trade dispute on August 1st, the Swiss National Day. However, US President Donald Trump did not announce a resolution to the dispute during the celebrations.

In light of the failed negotiations and the US imposing steep tariffs on Swiss imports, there's a growing push among Swiss politicians to apply a more assertive policy-and-legislation strategy in future trade disputes. Furthermore, this general-news development is expected to significantly influence the politics surrounding trade agreements, not only between the US and Switzerland but also with other global powers.
