US expels Mexican boxer Chavez Jr. over suspected links to criminal cartel
Boxing Legend Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. Deported from the United States
In a shocking turn of events, former WBC middleweight world champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. has been deported from the United States following his arrest by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents in Los Angeles. The deportation comes four days after his lopsided loss to YouTuber-turned-boxer Jake Paul.
Chavez, the son of boxing icon Julio Cesar Chavez Sr., had entered the US legally in 2023 on a tourist visa that was valid until February 2024. However, the US Department of Homeland Security (DHS) revealed that Chavez is accused of serving as a henchman for the Sinaloa drug cartel and has criminal convictions in the US, including for possession of an assault weapon in January 2024 in Los Angeles.
According to Mexican media, Chavez was a "hitman" used to punish members of the cartel. The US Department of Homeland Security stated that Chavez's US citizen partner is connected to the Sinaloa Cartel through a prior relationship with the now-deceased son of the infamous cartel leader Joaquin 'El Chapo' Guzman.
The Sinaloa drug cartel has been designated a foreign terrorist organization by Washington this year. Chavez is alleged to have trafficked firearms and explosives, and his career has included multiple suspensions and fines for failed drug tests.
In April 2024, Chavez applied for permanent residency based on his marriage to a US citizen. However, his defense team sought to prevent his prosecution in Mexico by filing multiple legal appeals, which were rejected by the Mexican courts. After his US arrest, Chavez was handed over and transferred to a prison in Mexico's Sonora state on Monday.
DHS Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin stated, "Under President Trump, no one is above the law -- including world-famous athletes." The US Department of Homeland Security expressed astonishment that the administration of Joe Biden did not prioritize Chavez's deportation under President Trump.
President Claudia Sheinbaum confirmed Chavez's deportation from the United States. Chavez won the WBC middleweight world title in 2011 and successfully defended it three times. His father, Julio Cesar Chavez Sr., was a world champion in three weight divisions, and held various title belts from 1984 to 1996.
