US court decides to expel pro-Palestinian activist Khalil, directing him to be sent to Algeria or Syria

In a court filing on September 12, Judge Jamee Comans ordered the removal of Khalil, a former Columbia University student and prominent pro-Palestinian activist, from the United States. The destination for Khalil's removal is either Algeria or Syria.

The judge's order asserts that Khalil willfully misrepresented material facts on their green card application. This finding follows Khalil's detention by immigration authorities for three months beginning in March.

Khalil, who is a legal permanent resident and a US-born son married to a US citizen, responded to the decision by stating that it is no surprise the Trump administration is retaliating against them for exercising free speech.

In addition to being a visible leader of nationwide pro-Palestinian campus protests, Khalil was released from custody in June. The activist has continued to face threats of deportation from federal authorities.

Recently, Khalil made a statement to the American Civil Liberties Union, expressing their concerns about the potential repercussions of their activism. The ACLU has not yet commented on the matter.

It is important to note that this order is part of a larger trend of increased scrutiny and deportation threats against immigrants who are involved in political activism, particularly those who support causes deemed controversial by the current administration.

As the situation develops, Khalil's case serves as a stark reminder of the potential consequences that can arise from exercising one's right to free speech, especially in the context of political activism.
